Fire Precautions

The tragic night club fire in Brazil over the weekend caught the attention of the World's media because of the scale of the tragedy.  That's not a surprise.  Any loss of life is a tragedy for someone.  Over 200 people dying on a night out when they expected a good time makes us all stop for a moment.  But it seems we don't learn.  Similar tragedies have occurred in the USA, Russia, China, India, Phillipines, Thailand, Argentina, France and now Brazil.  .

The fact is though that this isn't an unknown problem.  We have had years of unsafe evacuation arrangements in various places - factories, night clubs, football stadiums, transport networks, etc. and every time more people die needlessly.

Fire safety is relatively simple to manage.  Avoid sources of ignition near to fuel, have an escape route and make sure it is clear.  Of course there are other things to consider like structures, housekeeping and the activity you are undertaking at the time but even if you have a fire, an alarm and a safe evacuation route then at least most people will get out most of the time.

Too often locked or obstructed fire escapes are only noticed after the event.  If there is one thing any business or property owner can do to make these tragedies less likely it is to make sure the fire escapes are clear and openable.  Then make sure people can find their way to them if a fire should break out.

If you own a business or a property make the check today.  It won't take long but it could be the best time you'll spend in the year.
